New York's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is a need-based grant, worth $1,000 to $5,665 a year, that does not need to be repaid. It is available to full-time, part-time, and non-degree students who are U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens, have been legal New York State residents for at least 12 continuous months, and meet income limits: net taxable income cannot exceed $125,000 for dependent students, $60,000 for married students with no dependents, or $30,000 for independent single students with no dependents. The award amount depends on income, the number of family members enrolled in college, and how many semesters of TAP a student has already used.
Apply through the FAFSA for the 2026-27 academic year; the TAP deadline is June 30, 2027.
